Following a sleepy summer, the labor market woke up with the release of the September jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Reporting strong gains of 242,000, employment growth was widespread across industries. Likewise, Monster job numbers continued to grow with overall active job postings up 4% over the past month.

“As we transition from summer to autumn, many sectors, particularly retail and hospitality, ramp up hiring in preparation for the holiday season,” says Monster Economist Giacomo Santangelo. “Significant job gains in food services, healthcare, social assistance, and construction indicate robust demand in these areas.”
